2008 has been a good year for me. I published my 7th book and 1st full length novel, Burnt Incense: A Novel of Trust, Deceit, Defense. You can read the excerpts along the left side bar or click on the cover for more details. Those who have read it — LOVE it, and are clamoring for a sequel. Whew, that’s another three years of work.

My Writing

One of my favorite anecdotes on writing is about James Thurber. A guest at a dinner party noticed a puzzled expression on James Thurber’s face and mentioned it to Mrs. Thurber. “Don’t be concerned,” replied Thurber’s wife, “he’s writing!”

Writing is that rare profession where one is actually working while staring out a window, or listening to bits of conversation. Writers begin with a vision, a dream that someday their ideas will be transcribed into words, printed on sheets of white paper, perfectbound between the covers of a published book, and sold to countless readers.

EDITING YOUR 5 C’s

If you are editing your own manuscript, you should at least have it reviewed by someone who understands grammar, correct usage, and punctuation rules. Look for the 5 C’s in your manuscript: Consistency, Clarity, Conciseness, Completeness, and Coherence.

REVISIONS, REVISIONS

- Every passage in your manuscript should move it forward. Avoid repetition or phrases that don’t say very much.

- Writing is never finished. There is always another or better way to say something.

- We all have stories to tell and ideas to share. And tell them we must. For it is in writing that we understand ourselves, and to publish that knowledge is an act of courage.
